J.S. BOONE, MAJOR
CHIEF DEPUTY
Major Jeffrey S. Boone serves as the Chief Deputy of the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office. Major Boone is second in command and assumes the roll of Chief Executive Office in the absence of the Sheriff.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1988, serving with Marine Corps Security Force Battalion Atlantic and 1st Battalion 3rd Marines. He is a veteran of the Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm campaign of the Gulf War.
After completing his military service, Major Boone began his career in law enforcement with the Town of Vinton Police Department in 1995. There, he held various roles, including patrol officer and criminal investigations, and served as a patrol sergeant.
In July 1999, he joined the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff assigned to the patrol division. In January 2004, Major Boone was promoted to Sergeant, assuming the duties of sergeant in patrol. Upon promotion to Lieutenant in 2015, he served concurrently as a Patrol Lieutenant and Team Commander of the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team (ERT).
In January 2020, Major Boone was promoted to Captain and assigned to serve as the Law Enforcement Division Commander.
In July 2022, Sheriff Ward appointed Major Boone as Chief Deputy. The Chief Deputy is second in command and is responsible for the administration, internal organization, efficiency, and readiness of the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office. The Chief Deputy performs the duties of the Sheriff during his absence or disability and such other duties as the Sheriff may specifically direct.
Captain David C. Dillow is the Commander of the Law Enforcement Division.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1992, serving with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 (MWSS-271), Marine Air Control Group 28 (MAG-28), and Marine Wing Support Squadron 171 (MWSS-171), Marine Aircraft Group 12 (MAG-12), to support air-ground support requirements.
After completing his military service, Captain Dillow began his career in law enforcement with the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office in 2000 as a patrol deputy in the Law Enforcement Division. There, he held various roles, including patrol officer, criminal investigations, and served as a supervisor in the Criminal Investigations Unit as a Sergeant.
In January 2020, Captain Dillow was promoted to Lieutenant, assuming the supervisory duties of the Criminal Investigations Unit.
In July 2022, Captain Dillow was promoted to Captain, assigned to serve as the Law Enforcement Division Commander. Captain Dillow is a native of Botetourt County and earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Bluefield College. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (291st Session).

S.M. Gathje, Captain
Services division
Captain Scott M. Gathje serves as the Commander of the Services Division.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1989 serving as a Small Arms Repairer/Technician at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. In June, 1990 Captain Gathje reported to 3rd Marine Logistics Group, Okinawa, Japan. In December, 1991 he then served with Headquarters Company 1st Marines, Camp Pendleton, CA. In April, 1995 he was ordered back to Aberdeen Proving Grounds as a Small Arms Repair Instructor.
After completing his military service, Captain Gathje began his law enforcement career with the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office in September 1998 as a patrol deputy in the Law Enforcement Division. There, he held various roles, including Patrol Sergeant and Patrol Lieutenant. In 2013 Captain Gathje was laterally transferred to the School Resource Unit assuming the duties of Sergeant of the unit. In October 2018 he was then transferred back to the Law Enforcement Division as a Patrol Lieutenant.
In January 2022, Captain Gathje was promoted to Captain, assigned to serve as the Services Division Commander. Captain Gathje has completed FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (LEEDA) training in Supervisor, Command, and Executive levels.
Captain Leslie A. Huthwaite is the Commander of the Corrections Division.
Captain Huthwaite began her career in corrections with the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office in 2007 as a corrections deputy where she has held various roles, including corrections deputy, Shift Sergeant, and Shift Lieutenant.
In December 2012, Captain Huthwaite was promoted to Sergeant, assuming the supervisory duties as a Shift Sergeant. She was then promoted in December 2013 to Lieutenant, assuming supervisory duties as the Shift Commander.
In July 2022, Captain Huthwaite was promoted to Captain, assigned to serve as the Corrections Division Chief Correctional Officer. Captain Huthwaite is a native of Botetourt County and earned her Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Virginia Western Community College.
